Boxee testing…

boxee-logo

I have had a lot of people asking me how Boxee runs and how all the different content plays. I have never had great success with any of the flash content inside of Boxee, but then after seeing how well the latest flash 10.1 beta worked I was hoping all of the issue would be resolved.

I am not alone when saying that Boxee flash content simply does not work on a Revo. I am not sure if it the Atom/Ion combination, but it just doesn't work. Every single time you attempt to load up a video you get a black screen, weird sounds, and sometimes you will just get a partial video. I attempted to test shows that I knew worked such as The Office, South Park, and Family Guy, but no matter where I tried to access the video from, (Hulu, Fox, NBC, or Comedy Central) I got the same result.

Now Boxee runs great on the Revo for just about anything else. Pandora is fantastic, the movie catalog is very nice, and High Def Revision3 content works great inside of it. However until they get their flash problems fixed I am forced to use it for Pandora only :( If you have any suggestions or have gotten Boxee running let me know, because I would love to do a nice full review of it.

  1. Are you using a 3610 or 1600? If you are using the 3610, are you following the settings from this website (http://www.pauljroberts.com/my-personal-revo-3610-set-up-that-works-well) ? I have a 3610 and I followed Paul’s configuration and Flash based content in Boxee seems to work fine for me.

  2. I have the 1600, it looks like my setup is very similar to yours except I don’t have the Move plugin installed. I will try that this weekend. That is why I didn’t want to write up a full review. I have read on the boxee forums that a lot of revo users have had issues with the flash content. I will give it a go and see what happens. I don’t have much faith though, what I have been reading is boxee attempts to do a lot of work instead of just playing the video raw.

  3. I have the 3610 and trying to watch video content in Boxee is futile. I have tried every combination of video driver/flash beta I can think of. It is just a stuttery mess if I can even see anything but blackness. Even Hulu content sucks and I can run Hulu Desktop at High quality and it is perfectly smooth. Boxee has some work to do. It isn’t worth messing up the stability of my HTPC to tinker with getting it to work.

  4. I have a 3610 (Win7, 2GB/512MB dedicated to graphics) and initially had trouble with Boxee and Flash content but I sorted it all out. First of all download and run the Boxee beta. Second, make sure you haven’t adjusted your Windows settings to make your icons bigger – this creates havok within Boxee. Third: don’t use the beta releases of Flash – just use the current Flash plugin. The Beta doesn’t work with the Justin.tv plugin.

I heard the Wifi card uses some CPU – I don’t know for sure because I have my Revo hooked up to the internet via cat5e.

Also make sure you’re only running one program at a time, uninstall all the crapware and get rid of any superfluous taskbar programs.
